More on the 2010 Gubenatorial Election in RI April 30, 2009

Ok, I’ve already covered Independent (Formerly Republican) Lincoln Chafee. He support marriage equality.

The other likely candidates on the Democratic side are:

1) Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts. I’ve gotten word that she supportsmarriage equality. Further I have to be candid, I don’t think she has a very good shot at Governor. I’ve never really seen a Lt. Gov move up to the big chair. Same goes for Attorney Generals. But she does have the benefit of it being an open contest since incumbent Carcieri cant’ run again.

2) Current Attorney General Patrick Lynch. Based on his statements regarding marriage equality in MA, and the fact that his sister is gay, I suspect we’d have his support. I estimate his chances as poor since AG’s make a lot of enemies.

3) Current Treasurer Frank Caprio. I believe he is the most likely to be our next governor. I have sent an email asking his official position.

I don’t know who the Republican candidates are going to be, but I feel it’s a moot point since Chafee is running as an independent.

Look for more updates on this blog.

Chafee (Independent Candidate for Governor in RI) Supports Marriage Equality April 29, 2009

I wrote Lincoln Chafee’s campaign for Governor about his views on marriage equality. Here is the response I got back:

In answer to your question. The Senator supports equality for all individuals. He has repeatedly stated that “If elected Governor, he would sign into law a bill, if passed by the legislature, that reflected full marriage equality for same sex couples.”

I must say that the fact that Chafee still refers to himself as Senator leaves me a bit uneasy. But I’m glad he supports marriage equality. I’m going to poll the other potential candidates for governor and see where they stand.

But Chafee’s entry into the race is a game changer. The Republicans can pretty much forget it and I’m dying to see who gets the Dem nod. If we go by war chest alone I’d say Caprio.

Moving towards a post Suburban America April 24, 2009

I just watched “Sprawling from Grace: The Consequences of Suburbanization” on Netflix. Click the link and do a freebie trial and watch it.

I agree with the proposed solutions in this movie. It isn’t going to be just one solution though I do have great hope for electric vehicles. It’s going to be a multitude of different energy sources.

But I need to explain something. I got away from the urban environment for a few years. It wasn’t suburban per se, but it lacked the easy access to necessities if you didn’t have a car.

Just to remind you I live in Providence, Rhode Island.. See the marker labeled “A”? From my door to that point is 1.3 miles. That’s easily walkable within 20 minutes for me, maybe shorter or longer for others.

The point is, Providence is a very walkable city. Within 1.3 miles in any direction from where I live there are supermarkets, specialty stores, educations institutions, theaters (both performance and concert), a mall, and government offices. The train station is 1.8 miles from my door. The main transit hub for RIPTA is 1.1 miles from my door. Did I mention, the train station near the airport is almost complete so I literally do not need a car to get around in my city.

But back to the point of the movie. We cannot sustain suburbanization in this country. It is in short, an unlivable situation. Back two years ago we got a taste of what $4 per gallon gasoline did. A former co-worker and I did a thought experiment one day to figure out what we called the “pain point” would be for a gallon of gasoline. We arrived at $6 per gallon as the painful figure that would radically change the way we lived.

Our politicians are famous for not thinking past the now. There is very little attention paid to the consequences of continued suburbanization though some are waking up to the facts very quickly. We need governments to implement comprehensive plans to bring people back to the cities, and maybe even grow those cities at the same time.

I grew up in this city and wherever I’ve lived everything was in walking or biking distance. My friends and I would regularly bike from Providence, RI to Lincoln Woods State Park in Lincoln, RI (7.5 miles), not to mention the parks available in Providence like Roger Williams Park (Photo of the Temple to Music), and even Waterplace Park at the confluence of the Moshasuck, Woonasquatucket and Providence rivers.

We need more cities like Providence, Boston, NYC, et al.

It’s 4AM – And TMI Tuesday #183 April 21, 2009

I don’t know what it is, sometimes I’m so energized that I don’t want to sleep. This is just such an instant.

I skipped the last TMI because quite honestly the questions left me cold.

1. Marriage and children aside, what has been your greatest accomplishment in life?

So far? Starting my own company. For 16 years I worked for the State of Rhode Island and a few private employers. But I like the fact that I make the decisions, I decide who I’ll do business with.

2. Aside from healthy and happy children, what is your greatest ambition for the future?

To grow my company to the point where it makes me independently wealthy.

3. If we were to enter your real name in a search engine, what would we find?

Not too much. Most of my google references are my nom de net or my amateur radio callsign.

4. Who is the most famous person you ever met (not just in the same room as, but actually spoke with)?

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse.

5. Parents aside, who is your biggest hero?

Keyron. He’s just so comfortably out that it makes even my version of being out look sad.

6. Someone once worked out the sexual version of Six Degrees of Separation – Celebrity A slept with B, who slept with C, who slept with D, making as sort of connection between A and D. Are you connected to anyone famous through six or fewer bonks?

I have no idea. I’ve been fairly prudish about who I slept with, or at least that’s what some people think about me. There’s such a thing as perception ya know. I cultivate that like crazy.

Oh happy happy, joy joy. I love the TED talks so much. If my company ever gets big and notable enough I want to attend the TED talks too.

Here is an interesting TED talk. It’s about why people cheat.

In it Dan Ariely explains what lead to the Enron debacle but more interestingly to the stock market antics of recent years.

EPA to regulate greenhouse gasses April 18, 2009

At long last we’re seeing a culmination of the Clean Air and Water Act from the mid 1970′s. How is it that it has taken the better part of 40 years to go from the act, and all the court challenges to this?

It does make me very happy though. As I said to a friend, we both grew up during the environmentalism movement in the 1970′s, so too did President Obama. The baby boomers are dying off, and we that straddle the Baby Boom and Gen-X got a full dose of civil rights and environmental protectionism. It makes me incredibly happy to see this happening in my lifetime.

The gases in question are carbon dioxide (Cars emit both CO and CO2) as well as hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and sulfur hexafloride.

Of course the perfluorocarbons and carbon dioxides (CO and CO2) primarily come from burning petroleum products.

But sulfur hexafloride is interesting. It’s used by the utility industry as a dielectric in high voltage switches, breakers etc. But the arcing in those devices breaks it down into very toxic chemicals. So now the electric industry is moving toward vacuum breakers. This after moving from PCB’s to sulfur hexafluoride.

But back to the carbon products – this is going to mean big changes for the auto industry. It always amazed me that even after the gas crunch of the early 1970′s we slowly broke away from economical vehicles. But now I see it as the true crunch time, we need more hybridized vehicles, start with the big rigs then trickle it down to passenger vehicles.

Move toward purely electric vehicles. Tesla makes electric cars, more to the point very NICE electric cars that can both blow the doors off anything with an internal combustion (IC) engine as well as getting ranges near the 250 mile mark. It’s just that the prices are a bit too high.

So with that in mind, I want to see massive government subsidies for both the big rigs and the passenger vehicles. Make it economically feasible to purchase the first one.

First off you’d reduce oil and gas consumption. That’s a big plus because as part of that you’d also reduce emissions of the pollutants being regulated by the EPA.

Naysayers always like to point out that the electric grid couldn’t handle all electric cars. So to allay those fears, massive investment in green energy is necessary. Just where I am I get plenty of sunshine in the spring/summer, and lots of wind in the fall/winter. Solar panels and turbines would pretty much do it here.

It’ll be interesting to see how hard the entrenched energy and auto industries react to this latest move.

This is great news. The anti equality groups are really having a tough time pushing their message. It is a Sisyphean task when you really think about it.

And even the architect of John McCain’s campaign has come out and said the GOP has to embrace marriage equality! Not to mention McCain’s wife and daughter trying to peddle the softer side of the GOP. Sorry but that is a tough sell. I see the GOP as the Party of Business. Remember that one? Their mantra seems to be cut taxes and increase spending. We’re going to pay the price of that one for a long time.

But it proves that everything being put forth by the National Organization for Marriage is deceitful and fraudulent. Not to mention I strongly suspect that NOM has a mole inside, how else could they not know what M4M stands for?

Californians against Hate/Mormongate

But I will say without a doubt that the Roman Catholic Church is involved with this too. Curiously I can’t find any records of the formation of NOM in RI, which means this is being driven from elsewhere. So I cannot get any financial info on the organization.

But if the Catholic church still has any money left, I’m pretty sure based on their lobby activity against marriage equality that they kicked a few bucks into NOM. Consider that Bishop Tobin and parish priest John Codega are both NOM ‘advisers’.

But of course church financial records are restricted, lest anyone get any idea how much all that real estate is really worth.

I wish I’d had the camera with me again. Maybe I’ll go tomorrow and capture it all for posterity sake.

****UPDATE***

Here are the graffiti pix:

Lately I’m seeing more and more political graffiti, stuff like:

“Kill the Rich” and “Revolt: Kill the Bankers”

Then we have the teabaggers. Someone obviously didn’t do their homework, for the definition of teabagging is dipping ones scrotum in another persons mouth. But then, we have the National Organization for Marriage trying to use the acronym 2M4M. I guess nobody ever told them what M4M stands for, it means Male for Male. Doh! But someone beat NOM to the punch check out 2M4M.org, (They also redirect 2M4M.net to the .org address and the .com address is registered by someone other than NOM!)

Here are some pictures from the Tax Day Tea Party in Providence, RI

You’ll have to pardon the video. It’s a bit jumpy and sometimes wind noise drowns everything out. It was very windy today.

Movie Review: Second Skin April 15, 2009

Let me first say it isn’t a bad movie, and Jeebus love the Europeans for not thinking male nudity is something for which one should be ashamed.

That said, I found it a little formulaic. E.g. married guy starts an affair with another guy. Wife finds tantalizing clues but doesn’t make connection that her man is having an affair with another hombre.

Then her man forgets his cellphone at home one day. She starts going through voice mails only to discover her mans male lover has left a message. I have one question, what idiot doesn’t password protect his cellphone voicemail? Wait, wait. I know some carriers that use the Caller ID (CLID)to authenticate. It’s how my friend was able to check up on her man because she was able to spoof the CLID (With my help of course!)

Wife confronts husband. Husband confronts lover. On again, off again, on again.

Love btw is a surgeon which tips the plot about 20 or so minutes into the movie.

We see the scene where people have moved on. Hubbie separates from Wifey, tries to glom onto loverboy. Loverboy isn’t having it so hubby being his juvenile self (I know that feeling well!) speeds off on motorcycle, sans helmet. Next you hear a crash and there’s loverboy mouth agape. Then the obligatory hospital scene, and finally the funeral.

Sorry if I spoiled it for you. But it follows the typical gay movie plan. The protagonist dies at the end.

This is priceless. Stan Smith wants to speak at the Republican National Convention so badly that he almost throws in with the Log Cabin Republicans.

Watch it here.

The ending is interesting.
