Catholic Church is $19 Million in the red July 6, 2012

I love it. The Vatican has a $19 million hole in it’s budget.

This of course explains the offensive against the Sisters Religious that the Vatican has been pursuing over the past few months. Of course the church is pissed that the Sisters aren’t toeing the line regarding gay marriage, or contraception and instead pursuing social justice. But that’s just the cover story – the Sisters Religious hold a hell of a lot of liquid property. But I suspect the Vatican won’t be successful in this subterfuge and that the sisters would rather schism than bow to the Vatican.

I wonder how long before they start selling indulgences, or seats in the College of Cardinals. It’d be quite funny I might even entertain the idea of buying a seat. And just imagine, being the political animal I am, you might have Pope Anthony of Napoli!

The legal set-up leaves all their assets with the Vatican if the Sisters choose to leave the Catholic Church. If they stay they could sell assets to go into a trust fund for elderly retired sisters and to charities serving the poor. They really need to start selling off those assets, but I believe they need Vatican approval to do so.

But the catholic church in Ireland has ceased to accept letters of formal resignation from Catholics who want to leave the church. Of course people can just leave but then they remain on the books as Catholics and this affects the amount of money the church gets to run public schools (Protestants also run public schools). In Germany the government collects a tax for the churches based on Baptismal records. You can have the government cease collecting the tax but it’s a bother so most who defect continue to pay the tax. Germany is a major financial supporter of the Vatican.

The full report shows that contributions from dioceses and religious orders actually increased substantially last year. But bad investments has led to the shortfall in revenues. Perhaps it was a mistake for the Vatican, some years ago, to sell it stock in condom manufacturers.

But as the number of Catholics diminishes in rich countries the Vatican revenues will go down. Unless rich Republicans and libertarians of any faith (mostly of the Cynical Faith) decide that the Vatican is a great ally and throw their support (and dictates) to the Vatican.

So the church in Ireland is ignoring canon law and not accepting requests? Just defile the cracker on video and you’re out!
