Tech: Computers that last forever July 17, 2012

Just with a little TLC. I’ve just ordered keyboard #4 for this computer. So I’ve had it for six years that means I go through a keyboard every year and a half.
And I had to clean up some disk space. I rolled off older documents to an SD card – that got me enough space to soldier on until such time as I buy a new machine.
I have to give Dell credit. They made a pretty reliable machine in the XPS M140 line.
But when it comes time for new, I’m not sure who I’ll go with. Well, I can tell you I’ve ruled out Apple. I like the Samsung thin pc – but I need something with a minimum 300GB hard drive and right now SSD’s only get into the 150GB range. So I’ll wait just a bit.

My first home computer – a 486 IBM clone purchased mail order in the (early?) 1980′s lasted forever, with never a problem. I gave it away in 1999 or 2000 and it was still working 5 years later. When it arrived no one could figure out how to get it to work. It needed to be reconfigured but no clues as to how. I remembered seeing a $5 word processing CD at a store that had instructions on what to do if your computer needed reconfiguration. Sure enough those instructions worked. A bit of ancient history for the young.
Living w/o a computer would be horrid now that I’m a blog ho. But there are days when I think the industrial revolution and the computer chip should have been ignored…geek squad…we’re on a first name basis!
Oh – I’ve made a lot of dough over Geek Squad fuck ups. I can do things that they can’t do with their fancy diagnostic tools. And somewhere around here I actually have a Geek Squad diagnostic CD.
