President Obama says Heightened Scrutiny should be used March 1, 2013

In addition to a lot more.

This an historic moment, one I never thought I’d see. But recall President Obama on the campaign trail in 2008 saying and I quote that he would be out ‘fierce advocate’. And I’ll be damned if he hasn’t lived up to it.

Even in the video he makes the case that if they strike down Prop 8 and DOMA – then none of the other bans and amendments should no longer be able to withstand that heightened scrutiny.

It’s remarkable. The Supreme Court despite what they say does not live in a news vacuum. And the Obama Administration has been on our side with this through DOJ, Solicitor General, etc. It’s going to be an interesting spring and I suspect that the gay pride celebrations this year just might be the barn burners if in fact the court rules as I believe they might.

President Obama to have lunch with Mitt Romney November 28, 2012

This popped up on Huffington Post today.

On the one hand, I find this to be very gracious on the part of the President to even give Mitt Romney a hearing.

Do you really think Willard Mitt Romney can add anything to the political reality in the United States? I don’t. Romney offered no new ideas to move us forward as a nation. So the reality of course is that this is purely symbolic.

Though I would like to be a fly on the wall for this lunch meeting. There won’t be any press allowed which I find really interesting. Perhaps Mitt Romney will me marched out in cuffs and sent to Guantanamo? Nah, that’s just fantasy on my part.

I received this at Netroots Nation during the LGBT Caucus.  I know I’m a little late posting this but I finally got out the scanner and captured a digital image of it.

President Obama's LGBT Pride Proclamation 2012

This is remarkable to me because this is the first time in my life I ever remember a sitting President issuing such a proclamation. Thank you President Obama.

When people don’t know they are racist April 28, 2012

So this morning I saw a post by my aunt that piqued my interest. I’m paraphrasing here but she essentially said “How dare Obama expose a donor to the Republican campaign.”

I pointed out that records of donations, voter rolls etc. are in fact PUBLIC record meaning that ANYONE can obtain the data. So I see nothing wrong with what was done. If you remember history, Presidents from FDR on down have had enemy lists that they shared with various parties. Most recently we saw the outing of a CIA officer under President Bush’s terms, so I don’t find the release of this information by a sitting President to be all that much worth arguing about.

That is, I don’t feel like arguing that point. What I do wish to do is argue about the inherent racism in all the false accusations leveled at President Obama.

One habit I have when people make irritating claims is that I ask for verification, usually in the form of citation but with the caveat that they cannot use Fox News. Fairly simple thing to do, a google search will net your ‘facts’ and I know enough about sites out there that I can tell you who owns the site, and what their motivation might be in that case.

That’s when they start resorting to ad hominem attack against me. They call me a liberal, Obama supporter which I won’t deny it, I’m both. But they try to use it as a weapon.

The fact that they cannot produce ANY credible and verifiable information leads me to a sad fact. It is more likely than not their biggest problem with President Obama is that he’s a black, well, only half black if you want to be technical. But it’s back to that old one drop rule, but if people knew our ancestry, all of us, traces back to Africa.

So the sad fact that racism is alive and well in the United States. It may not be blatant, but it certainly comes out into the light of day when an anti-Obama idiot is trying to make a ‘point’.

One more interesting bit. When confronted with requests for citation and data, the racist pricks will first resort to calling you names. Then they’ll block you on Facebook because the truth is just too uncomfortable for them.

Hopefully I rocked a certain guys world with my persistent demands for, to quote Johnny 5, ‘More data!’ but I suspect I just hurt his little feelings by asking him to support his position. Awww – see that’s proper ad hominem.

Some soothsaying on national politics December 10, 2011

I’ve been following the news stories regarding Newt Gingrich (Hence soothsaying), Mitt Romney, and Rick Perry with some interest.

Because I think all of them have flaws that if the DNC and the President run with them doom any chances of their ever being President.

Gingrich for example has proposed putting kids to work as janitors in schools. That’s pretty egregious for a country that loves it’s kids.

Then of course we have Rick Perry and his anti-gay screed. That just doesn’t play like it used to back in 2004 Ricky Boy. And not for anything, Rick Perry is, to put it succinctly, an idiot. Those ‘jobs’ in Texas? Mostly low paying temporary positions. And Perry’s associates are highly disturbing, from whack job Pastors to big oil.

Now Romney – we were discussing him at work the other day. First of all there’s that suspicion that he’s more loyal to the Mormon church than he would be to we the people. And then there’s that magic underwear bit.

Plus Romney has the baggage of acting rather liberal in the overhaul of health care in Massachusetts while he was governor. It appears he can’t decide if he is liberal or conservative, he flip-flops with a regularity accurate enough to act as something to which to synchronize a clock.

In essence Romney is always after being something, be it Governor, President, all for the greater glory of himself and his church. Need we forget Romney’s claim to fame was doing leveraged buyouts of companies and flushing out the workers.

With this in mind I suspect that President Obama has a pretty good chance of getting a second term.

I also see the bloom coming off the rose with regard to the Tea Baggers. Yes, I will never stop calling them that. It is a summary of the bat shit insanity of the group.

You have Elizabeth Warren opening up a very strong lead against Scott Brown in Massachusetts, and we’re seeing some good challenges to the Tea Baggers elsewhere too.

I think we’ve all had quite enough of the obstructionism of the Republican/Tea Bagger alliance.

So check back in a year and see if I was right.
