Interesting things happen when straight people stop, think and realize that gay people aren’t demons. Arron Toleos was a typical straight frat-boy, but his thinking changed when he though what might happen if someone signed a petition to break up his family.
That started knowthyneighbor.org
PlanetOut does an interesting profile of the man. But here’s my thing – take your average Bush voter, his base so to speak. It is fairly common knowledge that the percentage of citizen with a Bachelors degree is only 27% of the U.S adult population. So the rest of us are ignorant, is it any wonder that religious nut cases can put across a message of hate? I don’t know about you, but I’ve found the more educated to be more accepting of gay and lesbian people.
More interesting is the fact that my own father signed the anti-gay marriage petition in Florida. To say I’m disappointed would be the understatement of the year. It’s not like he doesn’t know I’ve been in a relationship for nearly 14 years with a charming, talented, and cute guy. So in essence, he wants to insert exclusionary language into the Florida consitution, even though he knows he has a gay son.
I have yet to confront him becuase my anger is seething at the moment. But I’m beginning to understand why he signed it. You see, my father is a holy roller. Of course he’s learned all the WRONG things. For example he and I once got into a fantastic argument because he was spouting that the Bible specifically banned black people from being with white people.
He proclaimed to have read the Bible six times. As someone that has read and analyzed the Bible from cover to cover, I asked if he’d read the whole thing or just the passages his pastor had pointed out. You can probably guess the answer.
So it was definitely his ‘church’ that passed around that vile piece of paper. I’d bet that he caved to peer pressure. So should I anaylze this further I’d have no choice but to come to the conclusion that my father is a coward.
