Fran Drescher for Congress?!?

This could be the Democratic secret weapon. All she’d have to do is get into the Senate and turn on her Nanny voice and it’d be instant fillibuster.

But I do like what she wrote about the Broadcast Decency Act. And this piece about her seems to be bubbling over with praise to wit “she has a bright mind and good heart.”, not to mention that she’s pretty easy on the eyes and might actually get the NASCAR vote. So why the hell not have another actor in congress.

The Physical World is becoming Known

Apparently it’s very difficult to contain a mass of plasma buring at 100 million degress C, and every now and then some slips out and causes some damage to the containment structure.

But a group in San Diego has come up with a solution. Found it when I was drilling through some New Scientist Tech articles.

Another interesting tangent is that scientists at the Argonne National Lab have figured out a new type of spectroscopy that can identify pretty much anything including bomb components, nuclear components, diseases, etc. by their electron spin.

Tangents being what they are lead to this, a man who has built a device that is essentialy able to find bodies encased in several meters of cement, copper deposits several hundred feet underground, etc.

Then of course there’s HHO.

There are some very interesting physical discoveries being made every day. Lets hope that one of them can help us reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Because when the oil producing countries can’t export their product to us anymore, they can go and pound sand.

Music – what do you like?

So over the past few months I discovered last.fm. And I downloaded iTunes and started actually buying some old tracks.

One of my favorite like-artists stations is based on Con Funk Shun. And right now they’re playing Zapp & Roger’s More Bounce to the Ounce. Oh is that the jam. And in researching it, I found out that the funky bass is Bootsy Collins himself. No wonder I like the song.

What I’m finding is how much of an influence P-Funk and George Clinton had on music in general.

But I was a child of the 70’s and 80’s, having turned 18 in 1982 when music was music, not this overprocessed, overhyped crap we have today. Maybe it’s just me getting old, or maybe there has been a downward turn in music.

My boss did point out that almost all the music in my iTunes library at work is heavy on guitar and bass. I always thought I enjoyed horns and keyboards more. Oh well.

How I love the Huffington Post

One The Huffington Post would be brave enough to post this little song.

Honestly – the Republicans will beat the war drum that says no abortions, no stem cells, and absolutely no gay marriage. But people aren’t that single issue. But the best news of all is that the core religious conservatives are saying they just may sit out the 2006 congressional elections. Oh happy day!

Uh Oh – on antidepressants – Better read on

Looks like America’s darling otherwise know as the pharmaceutical industry has some esplainin to do.

It appears the Paxil, Prozac and other SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors)do increase the risk of suicidal behavior. Not only that, they increase the incidence of violent behavior. To quote “Depressed people are 6.4 times more likely to become suicidal while taking an antidepressant than while taking a sugar pill(2)”. The footnote then explains: “2. Among depressed adults taking Paxil, 0.32% displayed suicidal thoughts or behaviors compared to 0.05% among depressed adults taking placebo.”

So 3.2/10ths of 1 percent will off themselves. I suppose that’s collateral damage for the industry. Just an example of what .32% of say 1000 is, that’s only 3.125 people. But still statiscally high enough to present a problem.

What’s more interesting is that the FDA only requires two studies showing the efficacy of a drug. This gives the drug companies plenty of chances to prove that their drug works.

I recall having read a fictional story about an attorney who was offered a case to defend a person that had killed other folks. It turned into an odyssey where a pharmaceutical company was testing drugs on people without their knowledge. And this particular drug turned people into homicidal maniacs.

That story isn’t far off from the truth if you ask me. I just wonder what time bomb we’re sitting on.

Awww, poor conservatives

Seems that conservatives are starting to abandon the Republican party in droves. At least according to this editorial in the Washington Post. (If I haven’t recommended it yet, download Firefox and install the BugMeNot extension if you don’t want to register for the Washington Post.)

What encourages me most is that Dick Viguerie, a name that has surfaced numerous times in relation to George W. Bush, says that conservatives just might sit the elections out. Good! That’s where they belong. A conservative wants to set the clock back, we liberals think it needs to be set forward.

It seems the conservatives of Mr. Viguerie’s mold are against abortion, stem cell research, homosexuality, etc. The usual playground of the religious right. So perhaps he should call himself and those like him what they really are, religious conservatives.

I can only hope that someday Mr. Viguerie’s life is saved by a gay doctor who pioneered the treatment of that particular disease using stem cells. Or maybe it won’t be if the religious conservatives have their way with us.

SNL Is Getting Funny Again – Too bad its at our expense

Seems that Saturday Night Live is actually getting funny again. It’s just too bad that they’re far too late.

This is the latest of their little video parodies. Thank a non-existent god that crooksandliars.com keeps an archive of these things. Hopefully the Democratic party, as disillusioned as I am with it, will take advantage of the strong anti-Bush sentiment and offer up a plan. I think we all remember what a plan is. It’s something the DLC hasn’t been able to come up with.

Naughty Republicans! Naughty Democrats!

It appears that the investigation into the bribery of California Representative Duke Cunningham, who is now serving a ten year sentence in Club Fed, is widening.

Now it has managed to ensnare Republican Representative Katherine Harris of Florida, Republican Representative Virgil H. Goode Jr. of Virginia, and could potentially ensnare Democratic Representative Alan B. Mollohan of West Virginia and Appropriations Committee member, Republican Representative Bob Ney of Ohio; Republican House Appropriations Committee chairman, Jerry Lewis of California, and Democratic Representative William J. Jefferson of Louisiana.

You may remember Ms. Harris from the 2000 Presidential elections. She was then the Florida Secretary of State.

Interestingly of the group six, two are Democrats. This should tell us that business has managed to thoroughly corrupt both political parties in the United States. It’s time for us to take it back. I’ve noticed that there’s a serious number of alternative parties popping up al the time. Even Rhode Island had the Cool Moose party within recent memory. Maybe it is time!

The Judiciary Finally Starts Stepping Up

First a Georgia judge declared the consitutional ban on gay marriage to be unconstitutional.

Now a federal judge in Oklahoma says that the state cannot deny adoptions granted to gay people in other states and countries.

It is about damned time the judiciary finally stepped up. Where the hell were they when people and legislatures were voting in these ridiculous and exclusionary laws and amendments?

Have the Christofascisti finally overstepped their bounds? I certainly think so – their marriage to the Republican party is quicky coming apart as even the most rabid Republicans can’t stomach some of the requirements of the religious whackos. But it looks like the push is on to eject the Christofascisti from the seat of power and put them back in their closets where they belond.
